chance of rain

Clouds, lightning and thunder -- but as Macbeth says "full of sound and fury but signifying nothing."

As the drought continues and the playas, ponds and springs dry up, archeological relics are discovered.

mesquite beans

Originally the South Plains was an undulating grass plains -- without the ubiquitous mesquite trees. Mesquites can be attributed to cattle drives, where cows feeding on mesquites deposited the beans along the trail. Mesquites took root, literally, and compete with native grasses for moisture.

zavala camp

On the parched prairie, a spring-fed tank is a welcome oasis. The sight was as pleasant today for the caravan of buses on the Hockley County Ranch Tour as it was for the homesteading pioneers in wagons on the plains in 1903.

carnival by night

The 93rd South Plains Fair officially opens tomorrow. Tonight is preview night and I loaded the tripod to try night shots. OMG!! The traffic was horrendous blocks away and cars lined the streets for almost a mile. I felt lucky to get out of there and return home to retrieve a carnival photo out of the archives.

football practice

A patient mother waits for peewee football practice to be over. At least it is a great fall afternoon - but she might need the umbrella for tomorrow's predicted showers.

cabernet

My Iowa friend and I toured Lubbock's winerys today. We inspected the grapes at Pheasant Ridge, toured and tasted at Llano and enjoyed sangiovese on the patio at McPhersons. We are now off to visit D'Vine.

pete & re-pete

If you're looking for tire repair, turn off South Terrell Street in Midland to Pete's. I don't know if Re-Pete is his other brother Daryl or indicative of the quality of repair.

can you see a wc?

We spent some of our time in Europe searching for a WC (water closet) and then we searched for the correct coinage to access the WC. Generally, this facility was located either up or down a flight of stairs.

uplifting

If this image of the erection of the new Kent Hance Chapel on the Texas Tech campus is reminiscent of the Sept 9 image on MG Harvey's blog, the resemblance is coincidental. This photo reflects the building of a new place of worship whereas Harvey's image is the destruction of a longtime landmark. The revelance of God may be of secondary importance in either image.

Six-week old William Kip is the center of attention with grand-dad and great-grandfather looking on. William was the star of his daddy's birthday party- but Seth is prouder of his son than the cake and presents.

abandoned

The corrogated building in the 400 block of Avenue P has had many lives with the last re-incarnation as a night club. Now it stands abandoned, open to the sky, gleaming in the morning sun as one drives by on the Marsha Sharp.
